I'd heard that the castle was just a shell following the fire some years ago but was surprised to find so much of interest downstairs.We wandered around the ground floor rooms where you could see evidence of the upper floors that were once there .There was little to see apart from the exposed stonework until we went downstairs.Here, we discovered the kitchens,laundry room with old early washing machines,wine cellars etc..etc.--all the everyday working life of the castle in Victorian times was here.There was also an 'activities room' with displays of nursery toys and furniture of a bygone age along with some activities to occupy young children for a while such as colouring sheets and puzzles.A climb up the tower is a must for far reaching views on a fine day.After leaving the castle we walked the short distance to the rather ornate Catholic chapel of St.Mary's.This was interesting and should be seen as part of the visit.Do take the time to read the information notices in both the chapel and castle to make the most of your visit.On our way back to the car we popped in to the anglican church.What a contrast between this and the chapel!Although the castle does not belong to English Heritage it is free to members but they must pay the car park fee.
