This edition features drummer Chester Thompson. Born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland, Chester Thompson took to the drums at an early age.James Harris, a family friend and jazz drummer, first introduced Chester to the drum kit at age 11, and by the time he was 13, Thompson was already doing club gigs in the greater Baltimore area. Apparently he was a close friend of the band because in 1969 Genesis moved to cottage owned by Richard Macphail's parents to concentrate on writing. Yeah. Did you see any concerts in your younger years? Ive still got pretty mixed feelings about it. It pretty much broke me up. He wasnt a fan of the music. Yeah. But on that first tour Id be like, Come on, man. After 1978, this must have felt like a long-term gig. Reading the book I get the feeling that he only felt really involved in Selling EnglandFirst he says he had a slight inferior complex as a composer, his ideas were not well recieved, his marriage ended etc. He wasn't the only member of the band, and it wasn't a chnage that happened overnight. Were just dealing with Covid. That aint me., Despite thoseearly troubles, Thompson recalled that he hit it off immediately with Collins, which made their regular drum duets easy to perform. He made Frank laugh and a big part of those days was humor. Theyre such great singers. He ended up with a recording contract. Theyve got a studio. Whats going on? He said, Didnt you quit the band? I said, No, what are you talking about? Didnt you quit with Alphonso? I go, Alphonso quit? Basically, Phil flipped at Chester during the Going Back tour, for not playing exactly what he wanted to play, and they haven't spoken since. It was great. And they had great songs. It was really interesting because I never considered that I might learn to play other instruments. He asked if Id consider coming in. It was a huge deal. What a nice man, Don Van Vliet. Again, as humans, we adapt. They kind of assumed that he would. IMO, those are two of Genesis' best albums, ATOTT more so than Seconds Out because Seconds Out isn't a true Phil Collins Genesis album because most of the stuff was originally recorded with Peter Gabriel singing.
